Clinical Reference

The CHA₂DS₂-VASc score is the standard clinical tool for predicting thromboembolic risk in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. It is an extension of the CHADS₂ score, designed to better identify "low risk" patients.

Scoring Criteria

Acronym Condition Points
C Congestive Heart Failure 1
H Hypertension 1
A₂ Age ≥ 75 years 2
D Diabetes Mellitus 1
S₂ Stroke / TIA / Thromboembolism 2
V Vascular Disease 1
A Age 65 – 74 years 1
Sc Sex Category (Female) 1

Stroke Risk Stratification

Adjusted stroke rate per year based on Swedish Atrial Fibrillation Cohort study (Friberg et al).

Score Stroke Risk (%/yr)
0 0.2%
1 0.6%
2 2.2%
3 3.2%
4 4.8%
5 7.2%
6 9.7%
